The LS50 Meta is the latest version of KEF’s much-loved compact speaker. It looks almost identical to the original LS50, but inside there is a new Uni-Q driver with a maze-like absorber behind the tweeter that soaks up unwanted sound.
- Precise, spacious stereo imaging
- Very clean, low-distortion treble
- Beautiful build in several finishes
- Easy to place in small rooms
- Need a capable amplifier
- Bass is tight rather than deep
Design & build
The curved front baffle is a single piece of moulded composite, which keeps the cabinet stiff and helps the sound spread evenly into the room. The speakers are small enough for a desk or a shelf, but they really shine on stands, a little away from the wall.
Sound quality
The result is one of the cleanest, most precise sounds you can get at this price. Vocals sit right between the speakers, instruments are easy to place, and the treble stays smooth even at high volume. Bass is tight and tuneful, though a subwoofer helps if you want real depth for films.
Features
These are passive speakers, so you will need an amplifier. Pair them with something like the Rega Elex Mk4 or an all-in-one like the Technics SA-C600 and you have a complete system.
Our verdict
If you want big-speaker precision in a small box, the LS50 Meta is the easiest recommendation in our test.
